After years of anticipation and discussion, Bentonville has officially launched a name, mascot, and firm timeline for their second high school coming in August 2016. Bentonville West High School will be home to the Wolverines. The new high school is a positive result of the 2010 millage increase that the City of Bentonville passed just a few years ago.
5 News reported that, "Administrators admitted during the naming process that there was a political divide between those who wanted the new school named Centerton High School and those wanting it to be called Bentonville West High School. The new high school will be built in Centerton, but about two-thirds of its students will come from Bentonville, depending on how the attendance zones for the schools are drawn, said Mary Ley, spokeswoman for the Bentonville School District.
Principals during the voting process chose Bentonville West High School as their top choice. Some students, student leaders and principals were allowed to vote in the process in order to guide the School Board in their choice. However, the vote was non-binding, and the final choice was to be made by the School Board, Ley said.
Board member Matt Burgess said the new school will benefit from the Bentonville brand."
Bentonville is the last of the Northwest Arkansas metro-area to branch out in opening a second high school, following Fayetteville, Springdale, and Rogers. This new school will open to 9th, 10th, and 11th graders in 2016, and give 12th graders the option of transferring over or completing their final year at Bentonville High School.
This is an exciting time for Bentonville and for Northwest Arkansas!
