Northwest Arkansas is home to many distinguished entities of national merit – Walmart, JB Hunt, Tyson, Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art – but perhaps the most revered of them all is the Razorbacks.

The University of Arkansas is proudly represented by the wild hog we call the Razorback, and the fans that follow them are dedicated and passionate.

The athletic teams compete in the Southeastern Conference (SEC) and many competitors make national headlines.

Some, like Arkansas freshman Alex George, who recently won the 5,000-meter run at the 2015 European Junior Championship, make global news.

Cross country, track and field, gymnastics, volleyball, baseball, golf, swimming and diving, tennis, soccer, basketball and football – the Razorbacks bring fierce competition to all their divisions.

But you don't have to be a Razorback alumnus to catch hog fever.

"Individuals who are not students, faculty or staff can join University Recreation [UREC] if they are a current member of the Arkansas Alumni Association. You can join as a "friend" of the Alumni [if you did not graduate from the university]," says Lindsay Smith Assistant Director of Marketing and Public Relations.

Anyone can join the Arkansas Alumni Association and the cost for non-graduates begins at $45 a person or $50 a couple annually. An additional fee for membership to UREC starts at $125 per semester.

The Arkansas Alumni membership must be active for the duration of the UREC membership, Smith says.

The most popular facility of the UREC division is the HPER building. Opened in the summer of 1984, The University of Arkansas Health, Physical Education, and Recreation building (HPER) is a four-story building with several activity centers.

The building also facilitates the university’s health, human performance and recreational programs and offices.
